It looks like you and I will be eating more chicken this 2014. Retail beef prices remain at record highs, and we consumers will likely be driven more toward comparatively cheaper chicken meat in 2014. Given this trend, loading up on shares of Sanderson Farms (NASDAQ: SAFM ) , Pilgrim's Pride (NASDAQ: PPC ) , andTyson Foods (NYSE: TSN ) should be worth considering.
Lower feed costs loom as the main growth drivers for these poultry product producers. For Sanderson Farms in the fourth quarter, the feed cost per pound for its processed broiler flocks dropped by $0.042, or 9.7% from a year earlier. This decline came about as the rise in grain prices moderated during 2013's fourth quarter. Optimistic forecasts on corn and soybeans harvests, major feed ingredients, prompted the price retreat from the previous months' record highs.
Banner year for crops
The grain price downtrend is likely to continue, with banner U.S. corn and soybean harvests expected. The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects the 2013 soybean harvest to be the third-highest on record at 3.26 billion bushels, up 7% from 2012 and 3% above its previous forecast.

Sysco (SYY) doesn’t move look this. Really, it doesn’t.
Sysco’s shares have gained 4.51% to $34.03 at 1:22 p.m. today, which, if the stock closed there now, would be the biggest gain since August 2012. It’s also just the 31st time in 2612 trading days that Sysco has move 4.51% or more in either direction in a single day, just 1.2% of the time. It also has a beta, or volatility relative to the S&P 500, of just 0.62.
Most of the big-move days, I imagine, are like today, when Sysco got a big boost from its fiscal first-quarter earnings report. MarketWatch has the details:
For the period ended Sept. 28, Sysco reported a profit of $285.6 million, or 48 cents a share, down from $286.6 million, or 49 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding restructuring-related expenses and other items, adjusted earnings were lower at 56 cents from 58 cents. Revenue increased 5.7% to $11.71 billion.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters recently expected per-share earnings of 48 cents and revenue of $11.62 billion.
Today’s move is quite a turnaround for Sysco, which plunged more than 4% on August 12 after releasing a disappointing earnings report.
Guggenheim’s John Heinbockel and Steven Forbes remain unconvinced that Sysco has fixed its problems:
We remain Neutral-rated on Sysco, believing that an ongoing challenging economic environment and pressure on gross margin to drive top-line growth (and market share) will limit EBIT growth over at least the next few quarters. The longer-term outlook could be better, as some benefit is derived from ERP, but uncertain. The shares are rising 4% pre-market (vs. a 0.40% increase in the S&P 500), possibly on lower BTS expenses as well as a greater-than-expected CP-funded share buyback. We would remain on the sidelines and expect other names, like Family Dollar (FDO), Kroger (KR), and Five Below (FIVE) to outperform from here.
Try telling that to the mark

Although the Hostess acquisition was high profile, Flowers has made many similar though smaller acquisitions in recent years, taking advantage of the fragmented bakery industry to pick off targets individually with attractive buyout offers. Moreover, late last year, the company bought licensing rights for the Sara Lee brand in California, after Sara Lee changed its name to Hillshire Brands (NYSE: HSH ) and shifted its focus toward meat products. The move helped Sara Lee reap more money from its brand while giving Flowers more market share in the important California market.

Toby Talbot/AP NEW YORK -- Hillshire Brands is at the center of a barnyard brawl. Tyson Foods, the largest U.S. meat processor, has made a $6.2 billion offer for the maker Jimmy Dean sausages and Ball Park hot dogs, topping a bid made two days earlier by rival poultry producer Pilgrim's Pride. Based in Greeley, Colorado, Pilgrim's Pride is owned by Brazilian meat giant JBS. The takeover bids for Hillshire Brands (HSH) by the two major meat processors are being driven by the desirability of brand-name processed products like Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches. The convenience foods are more profitable than fresh meat, such as chicken breasts, where there isn't as much wiggle room to pad prices. Selling more types of products also would give the companies a buffer from volatile price swings of fresh meat. When beef prices rise and shoppers turn to other meats, the companies can sell more chicken or bacon, for example. While both Tyson (TSN) and Pilgrim's (PPC) sell some prepared products like frozen fried chicken pieces, their main business has been as suppliers of fresh meat for supermarkets and restaurant chains. Both offers are contingent on Hillshire abandoning its plan to acquire Pinnacle Foods (PF), which makes Birds Eye frozen vegetables and Wish-Bone salad dressings. Hillshire had been trying to diversify its own portfolio by moving into other areas of the supermarket with the $4.23 billion acquisition. But some investors questioned whether combining with Pinnacle made sense, given the sharp differences in product categories and the outdated image of some Pinnacle brands, such as Hungry Man frozen dinners. Hillshire said earlier it strongly believes in its deal with Pinnacle Foods but would review Pilgrim's offer. In its latest statement Thursday, the Chicago-based company said it would review Tyson's offer as well and made no mention of its Pinnacle deal. Pilgrim's Pride said it is considering its options and will "update the markets in due cou

The last time I looked at Star Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ:STSI) was in mid-August, when I pointed out how the stock looked like it was finally beginning a breakout via a move above that nagging ceiling at $2.11. I didn't revisit it in the meantime because STSI peeled back under that key resistance level, and even back under its short-term moving lines. It wasn't a dramatic or painful pullback, but it was more than enough to put the breakout idea on the shelf until further notice.

The stocks listed above all had a huge pop on the first day and three are currently Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) rated stocks. PBPB is not yet ranked as analyst reports have not yet come out. Having a rank of #3 (Hold) soon after an IPO is pretty common as underwriting banks have to wait a period of time before they can initiate coverage. The Zacks Rank tends to move up when there is a positive revision to estimates and that could take some time.
