    Early on Monday, analysts at Deutsche Bank lowered their price target on Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) to reflect a lower-than-expected valuation of an asset that the oil and gas exploration company is trying to sell.

    Though the analysts lowered OXY’s price target from $114 to $109, they still maintain a “Buy” rating on the stock. The new price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $89.49.

    Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Sankey said, “Bloomberg Finance LP reports that Oxy is seeking sale of 40% of Mideast operations for around $8bn, which would imply $20bn total value for the unit. However reportedly some suitors are valuing the asset at around $15bn. This is a relatively negative valuation against our previous view that Oxy would be seeking $25+bn for its MENA business. We are cutting our price target to $109/share to reflect this lower implied valuation.”

    Occidental Petroleum shares were up 96 cents, or 1.07%, during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 16.81% year-to-date.

Should advisers upgrade to the new iPhone?

With all the buzz today surrounding Apple Inc.'s introduction of two new iPhones, InvestmentNews polled its panel of technology experts to find out if advisers should upgrade.

“I like the fast speed, better battery life and the fingerprint sensor to protect advisers' sensitive data,” said JP Nicols, CEO of the research and innovation firm Clientific, and a partner at Bank Solutions Group. “I also expect that feature to improve payment technologies with better user identification and authentication. The faster processing and better camera could also facilitate more spontaneous video chats with clients.”

Other advisers disagreed.

“The only reason to rush out and buy a new iPhone (or Android) is because you just shattered your old smartphone, said Dave O'Brien of O'Brien Financial Planning Inc. “There may still be advisers without smartphones, and they may want to get current with technology, but today's launch of a faster, cheaper and more colorful iPhone isn't a game changer for advisers. The new OS7 may have some benefits for certain users, and the Touch ID security feature brings added confidence your data is a little harder to steal.”

A new iPhone known as the 5C will start at $99 with a two-year contract and will come in five colors, Apple said today at an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The high-end model, called the iPhone 5S, which will be available in three colors including gold, will cost $199 to $399 with a two-year contract. The phones will go on preorder on Sept. 13 and be in stores starting Sept. 20.

Tim Welsh, president of Nexus Strategy LLC, said the majority of new features for the iPhone are really aimed at enhancing the consumer experience.

“From an adviser point of view, they can definitely wait,” he said. “But, with the new enhanced ios7 and 64 bit, the new iPhones will be much faster, so that may be reason enough for advisers to want to upgrade.“

Ted Jenkin of oXYGen Financial Inc. said that, irrespective of the iPhone announcement, the biggest mistake most advisers make is not matching their technology.

“Technology works better when you have several devices that know how to talk to each other,” he said. “Pick a platform and stick with it rather than comingling devices.”

Jenkin said that he likes the iPhones' upgrades, specifically to the camera and high-definition Facetime.

The product introductions underline how Apple, which was a trailblazer when it debuted the iPhone in 2007, is increasingly following the strategy of other smartphone makers that offer handsets in different colors and prices. Until now, Apple only released one new iPhone model every year. As competing devices running Google Inc.'s Android software gain in popularity in the $280 billion smartphone market, Apple is expanding its iPhone lineup to reach more customers.

For advisers who want to impress their clients, Mr. Welch said that the they should definitely get the new iPhone.

"The new colors and design look amazingly compelling, super cool and as an adviser, you will definitely raise your profile with clients and prospects by showing that you have the latest technology," he said.

But others remain skeptical.

“I'm always wary of being first. I'd rather wait until they get the bugs out,” said Sheryl Rowling, chief executive of Total Rebalance Expert.

Elmore Leonard: Dying Improves Book Sales

Supposedly the works of many great painters do not reach their peak value until the artists are dead. In the case of Elmore Leonard, who sold millions of books when he was alive, a related phenomenon is true. Promotions for his books are everywhere. Sales of the more than 40 books he wrote almost certainly will skyrocket.

The first evidence that retailers and publisher will cash in on Leonard’s death is the front page at Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) book section. Under “More to explore” is the first promotion:

Award-winning author Elmore Leonard has died. His books–more than 40 in all–include Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and the Raylan Givens stories that inspired the television series Justified. He was 87.

The “40 books” phrase is linked to another page that allows people to buy all of Leonard’s books online. Members of the Amazon Prime program get a big discount on most titles. People who want to read the novels on their Kindles get a break on price as well.

Homebuyers May Have a Small Window of Opportunity

NEW YORK (MainStreet)--The U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to stand pat on bond purchases may be good news for prospective homebuyers. In the past few months mortgage rates have been creeping higher but have now reversed course and begun to decline.

Fitch, the credit ratings and research company, believes mortgage volume will expand over the near term. Rising rates had begun to weigh on mortgage application volume and lead to a sharp decline in refinancing activity.

"We believe yesterday's Fed announcement will reverse some of these recent trends," says Fitch analyst Rui Pereira in a report. "We expect mortgage interest rates to decline and give a short-term boost to mortgage volume as borrowers look to take advantage of the temporary reprieve." And in fact, mortgage rates have already responded, declining for a second week in a row, with the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage rate pulling back to 4.66%, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.29 discount and origination points.

The typical 15-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.7%, while the larger jumbo 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped to 4.77%. Adjustable rate mortgages were lower across the board. The popular 5-year adjustable rate sank to 3.55%, while the 10-year ARM retreated to 4.2%. "Mortgage rates have been down for two weeks in a row and with the Federal Reserve deciding not to start scaling back their stimulus, this will keep a lid on mortgage rates for the time being," says Kayleen Yates in a Bankrate analysis. "The slow growth economy, high unemployment, and the looming government budget and debt ceiling debates gave the Fed all the cover they needed to hold off on tapering at this point. However, once the tapering inevitably starts, mortgage rates will likely resume the upward climb." That means home buyers might want to take advantage of the Fed's temporary taper delay. Bankrate reports that as recently as May 1st, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 3.52%. At that time, a $200,000 loan would have carried a monthly payment of $900.32. With the average rate currently at 4.66%, the monthly payment for the same size loan would be $1,032.47, a difference of $132 per month.

In addition to cities and ports, BNSF efficiently serves many smaller markets by working closely with approximately 200 shortline partners. BNSF has also entered into marketing agreements with other rail carriers, expanding the marketing reach for each railroad and their customers.

Utilities and Energy Businesses

MidAmerican�� businesses are managed as separate operating units. MidAmerican�� domestic regulated energy interests are comprised of two regulated utility companies serving more than three million retail customers and two interstate natural gas pipeline companies with approximately 16,600 miles of pipeline and a design capacity of approximately 7.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. Its United Kingdom electricity distribution subsidiaries serve about 3.9 million electricity end-users. In addition, MidAmerican�� interests include a diversified portfolio of domestic independent power projects, a hydroelectric facility in the Philippines and residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States.

PacifiCorp is a regulated electric utility compa! ny headqu! artered in Oregon, serving regulated retail electric customers in portions of Utah, Oregon, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho and California. The combined service territory�� diverse regional economy ranges from rural, agricultural and mining areas to urban, manufacturing and government service centers. As a vertically integrated electric utility, PacifiCorp owns approximately 10,600 net megawatts of generation capacity. Kern River is based in Utah and owns an interstate natural! gas pipe! line system that consists of approximately 1,700 miles and extends from the supply areas in the Rocky Mountains to consuming markets in Utah, Nevada and California. Kern River transports natural gas for electric utilities and natural gas distribution utilities, oil and natural gas companies or affiliates of such companies, electricity generating companies, energy marketing and trading companies, and financial institutions. The United Kingdom utilities consist of Northern Powergrid (Northeast) Limited (Northern Powergrid (Northeast)) and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc (Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire)), which own a substantial United Kingdom electricity distribution network that delivers electricity to end-users in northeast England in an area covering approximately 10,000 square miles. The distribution companies primarily charge supply companies regulated tariffs for the use of electrical infrastructure. MidAmerican also owns HomeServices of America, Inc. (HomeServices), a full-service residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States. HomeServices also offers integrated real estate services, including mortgage originations through a joint venture, title and closing services, property and casualty insurance, home warranties, relocation services and other home-related services. (Fruit), Russell Brands, LLC (Russell), Vanity Fair Brands, LP (VFB), Garan and Fechheimer Brothers. Berkshire�� footwear businesses include H.H. Brown Shoe Group, Justin Brands and Brooks Athletic. Fruit, Russell and VFB (together FOL) is primarily a vertically integrated manufacturer and distributor of ba! sic appar! el, underwear and athletic apparel and products. Products, under the Fruit of the Loomand JERZEES labels are primarily sold in the mass merchandise and wholesale markets. Acme distributes products primarily to homebuilders and masonry and general contractors.

Benjamin Moore & Co. (Benjamin Moore) is a formulator, manufacturer and retailer of a range of architectural coatings, available principally in the United States and Canada. Products include water-thinnable and solvent-thinnable general purpose coatings (paints, stains and clear finishes) for use by the general public, contractors and industrial and commercial users. Products are marketed under various registered brand names, including Regal, Superspec, Moorcraft, Moorgard, Aura, Nattura, ben, Coronado Paint, Insl-xand Lenmar.

     Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B) -- could be one such value play right now. Suppressed by weakness in its industry and exposure to troubled financial stocks, among other things, these class B shares have slipped 13% from their 2011 closing high on Feb. 28 to trade recently for around $76. (Class A shares, which go for more than $110,000 each, have been equally weak.)

    At current prices, the stock trades about 30% below intrinsic value -- the true value of all its businesses combined -- estimates Whitney Tilson of T2 Partners, a hedge fund that owns Berkshire shares. "It's just about the cheapest we've ever seen it," says Tilson. Buffett himself, and his longtime investing partner Charlie Munger, have been publicly dropping hints that their stock might be a good buy now, says Pat Dorsey, director of research and strategy at Sanibel Captiva Trust.

    But there are a lot of investments wrapped into Berkshire, so it's worth looking under the hood for the solid core of the master's stock portfolio. Following is a look at seven of Buffett's best stock plays, why he owns them and why they make sense as buys if a weak market lies ahead.

    You don't have to be an expert technical analyst to figure out what's going on in shares of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) -- this big conglomerate has been in a textbook uptrend since the start of 2013. That's propelled shares of the $287 billion firm by more than 30% year-to-date, nearly doubling the broad market's gains over the same period.

    Now Berkshire's channel higher is pointing towards an end to the recent churning in shares.

    Trendline support is strong in Berkshire Hathaway: this stock has bounced higher each of the last five times shares have tested the bottom of the channel. This week, with shares creeping closer and closer to support, it makes sense to be a buyer on the bounce. Buying off a support bounce makes sense for two big reasons: it's the spot where shares have the furthest to move up before they hit resistance, and it's the spot where the risk is the least (because shares have the least room to move lower before you know you're wrong).

    If you decide to jump into Berkshire here, I'd recommend putting in a stop on the other side of the 50-day moving average; it's been a good proxy for support in the last few months.
